# How to Train Nitinol

Shape-set (train) Nitinol so it springs back to a set shape when heated, with three methods for hobbyists, engineers, and ThermoFlex Node users

Shape-setting (training) is how you give Nitinol a permanent shape that it springs back to when heated. There are three ways to do it, and they trade simplicity for precision. This section walks through each one.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Every method here involves high heat and equipment that carry inherent risks. Wear appropriate protective gear, work in a ventilated area, keep fire safety equipment on hand, and read the full safety guidance on each guide before you start. You perform these procedures at your own risk.
{% endhint %}

## Pick your method

The three guides reach the same goal in different ways. The Basic guide sticks to simple manual methods and accessible tools like a torch or stovetop, aimed at hobbyists and beginners. The Advanced guide brings in precise equipment such as kilns and furnaces with thermocouples, for engineers and researchers who need repeatable, high-performance results. The Electric guide is an experimental process that uses Delta Robotics' ThermoFlex Node to shape-set wire through controlled electrical heating. Choose the one that fits your tools and how much precision you need.
