## Products

<details>

<summary>What is a shape memory alloy?</summary>

A shape memory alloy (SMA) is a metal that returns to a trained shape when heated. Delta's muscles use Nitinol, a nickel-titanium SMA that contracts when current heats it and relaxes as it cools. For the materials science, see [What is Nitinol?](/docs/learn/nitinol-faq.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>What temperature activates Delta's Nitinol?</summary>

Around 90 C. That activation point, called the Austenite finish temperature, depends on the exact nickel-to-titanium ratio in the alloy. See [What is Nitinol?](/docs/learn/nitinol-faq.md) and the [Wire](/docs/hardware/nitinol/wire.md) specs.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I use my own Nitinol wire?</summary>

Yes. The TF Node Controller drives Nitinol muscle wire by Joule heating, and you can attach your own wire to the M1 or M2 outputs. Behavior depends on wire diameter and length, so calibrate before trusting any timing. See the [TF Node Controller](/docs/hardware/thermoflex/tf-node-controller.md) and [How to Train Nitinol](/docs/learn/how-to-train-nitinol.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>How many Nodes can I run on one bus?</summary>

Up to 127 devices over CAN from a single USB connection. Daisy-chain them through the CAN JST ports. See the [TF Node Controller](/docs/hardware/thermoflex/tf-node-controller.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I buy products right now?</summary>

The online store is offline at the moment. To order the evaluation kit, a TF Node Controller, a TF Mk.1 Muscle, or Nitinol wire, contact the team directly until the store returns. Email <mark@deltaroboticsinc.com>. See [Known limitations](/docs/help/known-limitations.md) for the current status.

## Getting started

<details>

<summary>Do I need the evaluation kit to get started?</summary>

The kit is the simplest path: it bundles a Node, a muscle, cables, and wire that all work together on the first try. You can also drive your own Nitinol with a Node you already have. Either way, start with [Getting started with the evaluation kit](/docs/tutorials/thermoflex/getting-started-with-our-evaluation-kit.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>How long does setup take?</summary>

Plan on about 30 to 45 minutes end to end, most of it installing Python and drivers the first time. The flex itself takes seconds. Follow the [getting-started series](/docs/tutorials/thermoflex/getting-started-with-our-evaluation-kit.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Is it dangerous to run a muscle?</summary>

The wire gets hot enough to burn skin and melt plastic, and the Node does not limit current, so treat it like a hot, high-current device. Run it in a ventilated area away from flammable objects, and keep the emergency stop within reach. Read the safety steps in [First time flexing your muscles](/docs/tutorials/thermoflex/getting-started-with-our-evaluation-kit/first-time-flexing-your-muscles.md).

</details>

## Software

<details>

<summary>Which Python version do I need?</summary>

Python 3.8 or later; 3.13 is recommended. Make sure Python is added to your PATH during install. See [Set up software and drivers](/docs/tutorials/thermoflex/getting-started-with-our-evaluation-kit/update-library-and-firmware.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>How do I install the ThermoFlex Python API?</summary>

Run `pip install thermoflex` (or `python -m pip install thermoflex`). The current package is version 1.0.2. See the [ThermoFlex Python API](/docs/software/thermoflex-python-api.md) page.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Which firmware version does the library expect?</summary>

The 1.0.2 library is tested against TF Node Controller firmware 1.1.1 to 1.1.2, and prints a warning on discovery if your Node is outside that window. See [Firmware updates](/docs/software/firmware-updates.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Where do I get help if I'm stuck?</summary>

Start with [Troubleshooting](/docs/help/troubleshooting.md). For software questions email <kevin@deltaroboticsinc.com>; for hardware, <mark@deltaroboticsinc.com>; or open an issue on the [Delta Robotics GitHub org](https://github.com/Delta-Robotics-Inc).
